Massenet, opera: Manon -
This event has now finished

A woman's freedom…
Manon Lescaut was a young sinner when she was thought up by Prévost in 1731. Later, in the Massenet version of 1882, she appeared as a naive virgin. In the 18th century when independence was only a distant dream for women, this character dreamed of freedom and, above all, Love.
Though first considered a comic opera, Manon has a definite tragic edge to it. Massenet's music swings from pleasant and gay to sombre and dark, mimicking the despair and passion in character interplay. Working with virtuoso duets and exquisitely complex airs, he delivers an elegant style that is, without a doubt, typically French.
