Gay Pride New York

A rainbow in the Big Apple.
Every year, hundreds of cities around the world celebrate Gay Pride or the Pride March. And the pride march in New York, the true cradle of the movement, is a truly fabulous event.
This is the birthplace of Gay Pride. In 1969, on the nights of June 27th and 28th, police conducted a heavy handed raid in Greenwich Village, home to many gay bars. When the police got to the Stonewall Inn, a hotel located on Christopher Street, customers rebelled and opposed the police. Clashes between police and insurgents in Christopher Street lasted three days.
A year later in 1970, gay activists, bisexuals and transsexuals came together and organised a march commemorating the Christopher Street and Stonewall Inn events. The parade marked the very first Gay Pride event, a tradition which is now popular all over the world.
