Romantic ballet.
The symbol of romantic ballet, Giselle or the Willis is a ballet composed by Adolphe Adam in 1841, with a libretto by Théophile Gautier. A precious work, Giselle is one of the few pieces in the repertoire, where the subject is explicitly dance and dancers.
Giselle, an innocent peasant girl, is in love with Albrecht. But when she learns that he is engaged to a young princess, she dies of a broken heart. The Queen of the Willis, the spirit of virgin girls who die prematurely, decides that the young man must die too, and orders that he dance until exhaustion. But Giselle's spirit is watching over him…
