Dethroning the King of the Waves.
The king of surfing is still around. Kelly Slater is starting a new season at the age of 40, a few months after obtaining his 11th title in the discipline... an amazing record!
He won his first trophy aged 20 in 1992, and has been the one to beat in the surfing world ever since. His opponents are at a loss to topple this Goliath of the waves, and can only hope for a dip in the "grandpa" of surfing's form.
The Floridian will still need to be wary of Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning, chasing the tiniest slip on his part. Not to mention the Portuguese surfer Tiago Pires and the French man Jeremy Flores, the latter having even won the mythical Pipe Masters in Hawaii in 2010, a first for a European.
The new season promises a great show between the skill and experience of the long-time champion and the hungry younger rivals vying to dethrone the king of the waves.
