Back in 1970, the very first New York Marathon took place: the course ran four times round Central Park, and just 55 runners completed the competition.
Today, nearly 34,000 runners participate every year in the most popular and legendary marathon in the world. The course runs through the five different areas of New York and crosses Brooklyn Bridge, finishing in Central Park.
